Non-human Comrades

From back cover:
“The attempt by humans to manage nature is the very tendency which resulted in the meltdown surrounding us, and more of the same is not the remedy.

The only way out is to be brave enough to abandon the commitment to human control, and anti-speciesists should be the first to do so.”

The (Un)real Existence of ADHD_Criteria, Functions, and Forms of the Diagnostic Entity

From back cover:

“The contemporary conceptualization of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) as a complex, multifactorial neurodevelopmental disorder cannot be understood as such without a complex assemblage of political, economic, and cultural processes that deem the conceptualization to be valuable and useful. In this article we use the notion of psychiatrization as a lens through which to see parts of these processes that make up ADHD what it is. In the first part of the article, we critically assess the scientific basis of the ADHD diagnosis via examining its diagnostic criteria as presented in the current fifth edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the so called “Bible” of modern psychiatry. The second part of the article asks what is done with the ADHD diagnostic entity and with the idea that it represents a natural neurodevelopmental state within an individual—something an individual has—as represented in the DSM-5. Drawn from our previous research, we analyze how ADHD becomes real in discourse practice as a powerful semiotic mediator through analysis of the various functions and forms in which it takes shape in institutional, social, and individual levels. We conclude that the frequent changes in the diagnostic criteria of ADHD do not reflect any real scientific progress. Among other reasons, they change to match better the maneuvers of individuals when navigating an increasingly psychiatrized society in the search for recognition, support, category membership, immunity, sympathy, and sense of belonging…

…ADHD is better understood as a social category that eliminates human diversity and enforces the standard model of what an individual should behave and be like in order to navigate within the cultural boundaries of normalcy and be a productive citizen.”

There Are No “Chemical Imbalances”: Exposing the Profit Motive Behind Psychiatry and the Myth of the “Chemical Imbalance” Theory

From back cover:

“…biopsychiatric theory and research resulted in a tidal wave of sales for the makers of Thorazine®, the first neuroleptic drug (meaning lobotomizing or brain-disabling drug – modern biopsychiatrists prefer to call this class of drug “antipsychotic”) and the increasing number of drugs like it. These companies, in turn, funded such research, for money invested in biopsychiatry was virtually guaranteed to result in ever-growing sales of psychiatric drugs. Drugs for depression, mania, and other “mental illnesses” followed; each made a fortune for the company marketing it; and those companies funded further research in biopsychiatry. This unholy alliance between corporations and scientists continues to the present day, giving us drugs for everything from nervousness to PMS to kids that are difficult to manage. No other medical specialty is underwritten by the drug industry to a degree even vaguely approaching that of psychiatry. And with each new drug brought to market for some condition, the list of types of consciousness that are deprecated as “mental illness” grows.

…The hypothetical disturbances of neurochemical function that are said to underlie “mental illness” are just that: hypothetical. No experiment has ever shown that anyone has an “imbalance” of any neurotransmitters or any other brain chemicals. Nor could any conceivable experiment demonstrate the existence of a “chemical imbalance,” simply because no one, least of all the biopsychiatrists, has the slightest idea what a proper and healthy chemical “balance” would look like.”

Without Informed Consent: The Global Export of a Failed Paradigm of Care

From back cover:

“The discourse around health as a human rights issue usually focuses on access to medical treatment. However, the “right to health” begins with the right to informed consent about the merits of a treatment, which has been lacking as a US-constructed “disease” model of psychiatric care has been exported around the globe. The narrative that supported the adoption of the disease model told of how major psychiatric disorders were due to chemical imbalances in the brain, which could be treated by a second generation of psychiatric drugs that fixed those imbalances, much like “insulin for diabetes.” Randomized clinical trials had proven that antidepressants, antipsychotics, and other psychiatric drugs were safe and effective. However, missing from this narrative of medical progress were three key facts: that investigations failed to validate the chemical-imbalance theory of mental disorders; that studies of long-term outcomes regularly failed to show a benefit for the medicated patients; and that this model of care has led to poor public health outcomes in the United States and other developed countries. The principle of informed consent in medicine can be expanded to include the obligation of a medical specialty to be a reliable narrator of its own research, which provides a framework for understanding the violation of human rights that occurred with the exporting of a disease model of care to a global population.”

There Is No Such Thing as a Psychiatric Disorder/Disease/ Chemical Imbalance

From back cover:

“In 1948, “neuropsychiatry” was divided into “neurology,” dealing with diseases, and “psychiatry,” dealing with emotions and behaviors. If there is a macroscopic, microscopic, or chemical abnormality, a disease is present. Nowhere in the brains or bodies of children said to have ADHD or any other psychiatric diagnosis has a disorder/disease been confirmed. Psychiatric drugs appeared in the 1950s. Psychiatry and the pharmaceutical industry authored the “chemical imbalance” market strategy: they would call all things psychological “chemical imbalances” needing “chemical balancers” —pills.”

“Veganism” Through the Lens of Decolonization

From back cover:

“On a personal note, and speaking as someone who lives a “vegan” lifestyle, many people ask me why did I suddenly decide to change such a big facet of my life. Modernization, industrialization, and colonization aside, the most honest answer I can give is because it allowed the most authentic expression of myself. I could not advocate for life and protecting the environment while I clearly turned a blind eye to the suffering of sentient creatures and the systematic destruction of our environment. My bottom line is and always will be: due to our history, colonization will always have remnants in Africa, our responsibility is our choices and actions.”

Decolonizing Individuality: Anarchism, Anti-Colonization & Anti-Speciesism

from back cover:

Since the reproduction of colonialism takes place on an individual level, individuality can be understood as a battle-ground; one can either choose to surrender to the pre configured meaning and values of industrial society, or assert a creative nothingness – an ungovernable terra incognita…

Possessed by identities, the humanized animal cannibalizes other (human and non-human) animals perceived to belong to inferior identities. From this point of view, consumption takes on a value and meaning of control and domination – a mirror image of the way capitalism consumes emotional space and transforms living beings into territories devoid of compassion…

Total Liberation as an intersection of anarchist theory and decolonial praxis, contrasts the statist group-think of the political left with an individual-focused self-determination that values a do-it-yourself ethic over the compulsion to organize, control, or govern others. With this comes an understanding of self-determination as a life force integral not only to the struggles of people native to the land – but to the flora and fauna that resist industrialization as well.

Anarchy & the Art of Hitchhiking

From back cover:

“Nomadic people have historically posed the greatest threats to and have been the most maligned by State powers. Pirates, Barbarians, Romani, and Bedouins, amongst other transient groups, have historically been in conflict with civilizing forces and systems of power due to their illegibility and the extent to which these populations are difficult to control. Hitchhiking is not only fun, but is also a strategy for evading the confines of State power and the repression that is an intrinsic component of forced sedentization. When I learned about hitchhiking, a world of possibilities opened up to me. Learning about and embracing this modality helped me see that none of the paths set out for us that dictate how we are supposed to navigate the world are inevitabilities. I could turn life into a choose-your-own-adventure story or RPG instead of being deeply depressed due to being confined to the normative trajectories that were imposed on me. In the traveling world, if riding freight trains is a science then hitchhiking can be considered an art. Riding trains requires a lot of precision and careful calculations, while hitchhiking is deeply complex, interrelational, and unpredictable. There is also no objectively good or bad way of going about it. As is the case with art hitchhiking is largely about personal style and preference.”

Animal Colonialism in North America: Milk Colonialism, Environmental Racism and Indigenous Veganism

From back cover:

“The Western hierarchical system that tends to divide people into categories was applied on nonhuman animals before it was applied on humans. “Wild animals” were placed below “domesticated animals” whose presence in the landscape was justified on the grounds of their utilitarian benefit for humans. While free-living animals were only useful for European colonizers when dead (to be exploited for their skin), domesticated animals served double purpose – as tools of colonization when alive, as well as providers of animalized protein in the form of milk or eggs, and as profitable “meat” when dead. This double usefulness hierarchically placed domesticated animals above their free-living counterparts who, in the eyes of colonizers, needed to disappear from the landscape to make space for the advancement of the Western “civilization.” ……

Despite most of the world population being lactose intolerant (and predominantly people of color), milk has been universally represented as staple food and, together with meat, has been used as a colonial tool for gender and racial discrimination. While plant-based diets have been represented by the Western colonial culture as inferior and linked to emasculation, weakness, and racial inferiority, milk continues to serve as a symbol of white supremacy with its culturally constructed connection to white purity, whole-someness and virility……

Indigenous plant-based foodways have been diminished and carnist diet was imposed on cultures that had previously consumed no or very little meat. Today, Indigenous vegans, Black vegans, and other vegans of color are “challenging the paradoxical stereotype of veganism as elite and white.” For example, in their book Decolonize Your Diet: Mexican-American Plant-Based Recipes for Health and Healing, Luz Calvo and Catrióna Rueda Esquibel provide an extensive collection of traditional plant-based recipes with the intention to rediscover their roots. The overarching argument of their work is that Mexicans and Indigenous people in general must rediscover and reappropriate their traditional plant-based diets in order to reclaim both their physical and spiritual health.”

From Healing Herbs to Dangerous Drugs: Western Medicine’s War on the Natural World

From back cover:

“Western medicine’s preference for the development and marketing of dangerous drugs over the earlier use of healing herbs is a direct product of its mechanistic beliefs. Rather than use the entire plant, western medicine prefers to isolate the plant’s most active ingredients in order to develop a more potent force. However, in general, isolated and “refined” drugs are much more toxic than are the substances from which they are derived. (It is no coincidence that the word “pharmaceutical” derives from an ancient Greek word meaning “poison.”) It appears that the combined properties of plants serve complementary functions providing safeguards that are missing when particular ingredients are refined and extracted from the whole plant…

…while researchers attempt to justify animal experimentation by the claim that animals are different from human beings, they also seek to justify it scientifically by “reasoning” that animals are similar to human beings. But, although animals are similar to humans in the important aspects of life – i.e., they feel joy, sadness, loneliness, and fear- their physiologies differ significantly from our own. Each species has a unique constitution and develops diseases and responds to drugs in very different ways. Thus, “penicillin kills guinea pigs. But the same guinea pigs can safely eat strychnine, one of the deadliest poisons for humans – but not for monkeys”; opium is “harmless to dogs and chickens”; “morphine, which calms and anesthetizes humans, causes maniacal excitement in cats and mice”; thalidomide, though tested extensively and “proven” safe in several species, later caused birth defects in the ten thousand children born to pregnant mothers who took this drug.”

Native Americans and Vegetarianism

From back cover:

“How well we know the stereotype of the rugged Plains Indian: killer of buffalo, dressed in quill-decorated buckskin, elaborately feathered eaddress, and leather moccasins, living in an animal skin teepee, master of the dog and horse, and stranger to vegetables. But this lifestyle, once limited almost exclusively to the Apaches, flourished no more than a couple hundred years. It is not representative of most Native Americans of today or yesterday. Indeed, the “buffalo-as-lifestyle” phenomenon is a direct result of European influence…”

The Killing Game: An Ecofeminist Critique of Hunting

From back cover:

“Most hunters ignore the question of the animal’s subjective experience, defending their actions by reference to the purity of their own motives and desires, and, in particular, by presenting their desire to hunt as a need. Hunters have used several strategies to justify hunting, which I have categorized by means of a tripartite typology that distinguishes hunters according to the particular need they argue hunting fulfills: The “happy hunter” hunts for the purpose of enjoyment and pleasure, as well as character development (psychological need); the “holist hunter’ hunts for the purpose of maintaining the balance of nature (ecological need); and the “holy hunter” hunts in order to attain a spiritual state (religious need)…

…Hunters claim that in the course of stalking their prey, they imaginatively enter into the life of the animal. But whereas hunters claim that this exercise in imagination helps them develop feelings of empathy for the animal, it is their inability to understand the experience of nonhuman animals that is a prerequisite of their hunt. As we have seen, hunters also emphasize the keen sense of alertness and attention that characterizes their state of mind. It is apparent, however, that if hunters were truly attending to nature, instead of to their own amorphous feelings of “love” and “connection,” they would feel the terror and fright of the animal they seek to kill…

…The pursuit of the animal expresses the hunter’s yearning to repossess his lost female and animal nature. The death of the animal ensures that this oneness with nature is not genuinely attained. Violence becomes the only way in which the hunter can experience this sense of oneness while asserting his masculine self-identity as an autonomous human being. By killing the animal, the hunter ritually enacts the death of his longing for a return to a primordial female/animal world.”

There Is No Respectful Way to Kill an Animal

From back cover:

“The prayers and ceremonies do something for us, not the deer, at the very least not the same thing for the deer, and there is no way to escape the fundamental inequity of the relationship. I would go as far as to say the lack of relationship: she’s dead, we’re not. If, as some would suggest, a relationship between hunter and prey is realized through respectful rituals, it is hard to get around the fact that one of the most significant aspects of that relationship—its symmetry and equity and power balance— is ended when one party is dead. This is not to say that prayers and ceremonies are of no value for the person who has no choice but to kill. It is to say the deer will always get the worst part of the bargain no matter how carefully it is done, and any hunter who is experienced, and honest, knows that in spite of the most thoughtful efforts to minimize suffering it doesn’t always go well. Even with the ceremonies and prayers it’s an ugly business.

…I’m in favor of people thinking through what might constitute ethical choices for themselves rather than accepting whatever authority figure—traditional or otherwise—that would make those decisions for them.”

Identity Crisis: Identity, Politics and Anti-Politics (An Excerpt from Queer Ultra Violence Bash Back! Anthology)

This text was retrieved from Bash Back! is Dead; Bash Back Forever! which is part of a larger anthology called Queer Ultraviolence. We find these texts to be an exceptionally valuable contribution to queer nihilist theory and practice, and so we felt compelled to make this particular text more accessible as a stand alone zine. In our opinion, the problem of identitarianism embarrassingly continues to plaque the anarchist movement (or whats left of it) even today as we publish this zine. As a queer nihilist project ourselves, we whole-heartedly relate to the authors perspective and find tremendous affinity with queerness as a lifesstyle of negation rather than a mere academic politic.

Is Straight Edge Political? A Fanzine on the Political Potential of Straight Edge

A few words before you start reading this fanzine here. First, let me briefly explain how I came up with the idea to address the question: Is Straight Edge political? I myself have been living drug-free for several years and use Straight Edge (or sxe) as the proper name for my life. The subculture often teaches me that the decision to live sober or sxe is a deeply personal one and often comes from a blunt “I’m better than you because I’m sober” and often goes along with the stereotype of the caveman who doesn’t consume but instead lifts weights endlessly and hits on other people at hardcore shows. Often this cliché may be true, and I often wish that this would change, as I see that in addition to self-optimisation, there are often many more layers to which Straight Edge can be applied. I often move in anti-fascist spaces in my spare time, and from a left-wing perspective, this zine is also written – as a kind of straight edge intersectionalism. From this perspective i tried to look on different topics like consumer criticism, sex or animal right.

From back cover:

“The union is often referred to as some crystallized structure or organization. This is at complete odds with Stirner’s actual writings on union, association, and relations between individuals in “The Unique and Its Property”. Stirner does not discuss the union as some static relation between two or more individuals, but instead as shared life activity of two or more self-interested individuals. The association is one of both immanence and transience, it is felt, lived, and experienced in-the-moment.”

“Those who still say that technology is “neutral,” “merely a tool,” have not yet begun to consider what is involved…Today we experience control as a steady reduction of our contact with the living world, a speeded-up Information Age emptyness drained by computerization and poisoned by the dead, domesticating imperialism of high-tech method. Never before have people been so infantalized, made so dependant on the machine for everything; as the earth rapidly approaches its extinction due to technology, our souls are shrunk and flattened by its pervasive rule. Any sense of wholeness and freedom can only return by the undoing of the massive division of labour at the heart of technological progress. This is the liberatory project in all its depth.”

Stories of Total Liberation (A collection of personal stories written by vegan, straight edge anarchists)

From back cover:

What is a political label or identity if not just another number within a sea of political categories?

In moving from politics to anarchy, one actualizes revolt beyond the realm of theory. Language itself often fails to capture the fluidity of life in motion – the transformation of one’s desire for freedom into material action.

To refuse both intoxication culture and the collective normalization of human supremacy is to rewild an internalized domestication responsible for determining one’s view and treatment of others. Without the guidance of politicians or patience for any future revolution, total liberation means obtaining freedom here and now – led by a burning desire to destroy the immediate ideological mechanisms of one’s confinement.

The present is all we have.

Even without hope we continue to fight.

We weaponize our minds and bodies against all cages – including those designed to subordinate our perception of reality.

We know that no authority can ever give us freedom – so we create our own by reclaiming our lives.

Without taking action, words become nothing more than empty political rhetoric in the graveyard of history.

Why Vegan Anarchy? A Vegan Look into the Reasons For Anarchy

“Mainstream vegan reading material is often written from a liberal rather than a radical perspective. By “radical” we mean a perspective that addresses the “root” of speciesism and human supremacy. While under capitalism, individual consumer choices do play a role in upholding speciesism and human supremacy, we also acknowledge the role industrial civilization itself plays in waging war against all animals – humans included!

This short pamphlet aims to offer an anarchist perspective to the vegan struggle for animal liberation by bringing attention to the technological-industrial, capitalist society that utilizes agriculture, land ownership, and environmental degradation to expand its control and power. It is assumed that the reader is already vegan and aware of the exploitative nature of capitalism and the social hierarchies of sexism, racism, ableism, etc. By understanding how capitalism keeps the animal liberation movement passive by transforming it into a profitable dietary trend, we hope to illustrate why we feel more vegan food options is simply not enough.”

Disorderly Conduct: Veganism, Eating Disorders, and Captivity

From back cover:

“The eating disorder recovery industry is a potent example of how human supremacy perpetuates harm and immense suffering. Have you ever heard anyone say they cannot be vegan because they are in recovery from an eating disorder? It is a common refrain foisted upon us by practitioners and institutions that force their subjects to view individuals with vastly different morphologies as commodities rather than as individuals who an alienating and oppressive global food system has likewise harmed. The recovery narrative itself is a fantasy when it is seemingly impossible to escape a context of imposed power that tries to force us into becoming as small, manageable, and legible as possible by prescribing rigid identities and modalities. Rather than viewing them as neutral sources of food, we should develop compassion for and solidarity with the animals who, like ourselves, are repeatedly abused by profit-driven food systems and psychiatric institutions that only serve the interests of those who hold power.”

Liberal Radical & Nihilist VEGANISM: A Short Exploration

From back cover:

“(This text was originally published in a zine called “Vegan Wild: An International Anarchist Journal of Total Liberation”. It has been slightly modified and expanded for the purpose of serving as its own zine.)

As a zine distributer and publisher we wanted to provide what we feel to be a basic outline for exploring vegan perspectives generally defined as “liberal”, “radical” and “nihilist”. Exactly how those of us affiliated with Warzone Distro understand veganism in our individual lives has been inspired by a multitude of perspectives – vegan, non-vegan, and anti-vegan -shared over the years. Reading and listening to different stories (and critiques) has without a doubt played an influential role in how we, as anarchists, relate animal liberation to veganism, as anti-speciesist praxis. In encouraging dialog, we find it practical to continuously challenge non-vegan anarchists, non-anarchist vegans, as well as question and expand our own understanding of veganism.

This text is by no means intended to be complete. Despite its simplicity, we feel this text has the potential to be a useful tool for those interested in creating further dialog of their own on the topic.”

America in Flames: Historic Uprisings Against Slavery

“Slave rebellions and resistance were means of opposing the system of chattel slavery in the United States. There were many ways that most slaves would either openly rebel or quietly resist due to the oppressive systems of slavery. According to Herbert Aptheker, “there were few phases of ante-bellum Southern life and history that were not in some way influenced by the fear of, or the actual outbreak of, militant concerted slave action.” Slave rebellions in the United States were small and diffuse compared with those in other slave economies in part due to “the conditions that tipped the balance of power against southern slaves—their numerical disadvantage, their creole composition, their dispersal in relatively small units among resident whites—were precisely the same conditions that limited their communal potential.” As such, “Confrontation in the Old South characteristically took the form of an individual slave’s open resistance to plantation authorities,” or other individual or small-group actions, such as slaves opportunistically killing slave traders in hopes of avoiding forced migration away from friends and family.”

How To Be a Happy Nihilist (English & Spanish versions)

To consider it a space to fill with your own values, to define how you want to be in the world and what you believe to be true. An active nihilist isn’t intimidated by chaos, they recognise it as a chance to create something new and better.

In my own journey toward sunny nihilism, I landed somewhere in the middle. I wasn’t horrified by a lack of absolute truth, but I also didn’t rush to write my own. Rather, I chose to pause, stare into the void, and consider the freedom of nothingness.”

Why We Refuse to Vote: An Anarchist Response to Critics

From back cover:

“Though there are some political distinctions between the two prominent parties in the so called U.S., they all pledge their allegiance to the same flag. Red or blue, they’re both still stripes on a rag waving over stolen lands that comprise a country built by stolen lives…We don’t dismiss the reality that, on the scale of U.S. settler colonial violence, even the slightest degree of harm can mean life or death for those most vulnerable. What we assert here is that the entire notion of “voting as harm reduction” obscures and perpetuates settler-colonial violence, there is nothing “less harmful” about it, and there are more effective ways to intervene in its violences.”
-Voting is Not Harm Reduction: An Indigenous Perspective

“To vote is to abdicate. To name one or several masters for a short or long period means renouncing one’s own sovereignty. Whether he becomes absolute monarch, constitutional prince or a simple elected representative bearing a small portion of royalty, the candidate you raise to the throne or the chair will be your superior. You name men who are above laws, since they write them and their mission is to make you obey.”
– On Voting

“Anarchists distinguish themselves by asserting a direct and unobstructed link between thought and action, between desires and their free fulfillment. We reject all societal processes that break that link—such as private property, exchange relations, division of labor, and democracy. We call that broken link alienation….anarchists are anti-political. We are not interested in a different claim to alienated power, in a different leadership, in another form of representation, in a regime change, or in anything that merely shuffles around the makeup of alienated power. Any time someone claims to represent you or to be your liberatory force, that should be a definite red flag. We are anti-political because we are interested in the self-organization of the power of individuals. This tension towards self-organization is completely orthogonal to democracy in any of its various forms.”

Against Community Building, Towards Friendship

From back cover:

“The idea of community is held in such high regard by anarchists that it’s eerily reminiscent of USA liberals paying fealty to the “sacred ground” of their nation’s capitol. Community is something consecrated and unassailable to anarchists. It’s the bond that binds us to our fellow true Against Community Building believers. It gives us belonging, direction, purpose, safety, all those good things.

But does it really?…”

“Community always seems to be the spark that ignites an inferno of hierarchy and domination. So much horrific oppression and death has been justified in the age of Leviathan by attaching it to “the good of the community”. I’ve seen so many people, including anarchists, sweep all manner of abuses under the rug in a desperate attempt to “protect the integrity of the community”. Somehow the community is always put before the people who inhabit it, as if a precarious eidolon drawn from thin air and held together by nothing but collective resolve is more sacred than life itself.”

From back cover:

“We are against identity because we think it holds this oppressive reality together. Our identities as marginalized people are our inheritances that separate us as inferior. For centuries, distinctions of inferiority have been used as the building blocks for exploitation and control. Identity is the infrastructure of our suffering and would need to be shattered if we wish to see oppression demolished.

Presently, identity pits us against each other instead of against the system’s infrastructures. Scrambling to tally distinctions of how oppressed we are in comparison to others and what we deserve to be compensated doesn’t end our exploitation and only keeps us distracted from making the necessary calculations to sabotage the infrastructure holding domination in place.”

Race is ‘Spooky’

From back cover:

“Race is an extremely important aspect of our contemporary world. It’s one of the first things you recognize in someone from as young as 3 months old and negative association begins before most enter preschool (Sullivan et al., 2021, p. 395). It alters our perceptions and opinions of each other. We check them off in boxes for applications of many kinds, but it has no biological basis. Race is an entirely social construct that many have tried and failed to base in biological science. Using Max Stirner’s (2009) words, race is a
spook….

…People see the clear, obvious, and negative effects of racism in society and want to combat that, but they also want to keep the concept of race that is so woven into the fabric of our society…

…Through my own experience, Ive had aspects of my racial identity questioned because they didn’t fit the stereotyped mold of what it means to be black…This is an issue where not only does the supposed top of the hierarchy reinforce these spooks, but so do people who occupy the lowest rungs.”
